Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon, this is Sam Knaggs taking a look at this week’s livestock markets out of Dubbo for the 1st week of March, 2026. 

Tallied numbers this week included-

 7100 fat cattle
19000 lambs and
  9700 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where the overall market saw positive increases across most categories, with restocker demand being very strong on plain PTIC cows and light weight weaners.  Large numbers of cows were on offer this week predominately 2 and 3 score cows while only a limited number of young cattle to suit the feeders. 

Young Cattle

Young cattle to the trade saw a solid increase of 12 cents, with prime vealers and yearlings selling from 440 to 491c/kg. 

Feeder cattle saw increases of up to 8c/kg, with the steers selling from 458 to 513c/kg and heifers from 392 to 481c/kg.

Young cattle to the restocker finished 30 to 55 cents dearer, with steers going back to the paddock for 588c/kg and heifers going to the paddock at 498c/kg.

Grown Cattle 

Grown steers and heifers were 8 to 10 cents stronger, with prime grown steers selling from 410 -488c/kg and prime heavy heifers sold from 425 - 476c/kg.

Cows 

Cows were 2 – 5 cents dearer, with 2 and 3 score processor cows selling from 260 to 376c/kg.  Prime high yielding cows sold between 372 and 410c/kg, to average 396c/kg.  Restocker cows were in strong demand to sell from 350 to 426c/kg

Bulls

The best heavy bull reached a top of 420c/kg.

Just a couple of quick quotes for some of Carter Lindsay & McHugh clients -

Cherie McWhirter of “Carinya” at Tooraweenah, sold heavy Angus bullocks for 477 cents, weighing 700kg to return $3350.

Dave and Terese Carter out at Nyngan, sold Preg tested empty Angus heifers for 467 cents, weighing 440kg to return $2060.

Lastly for Andrew and Nicolette Vaughan of ‘Iona’ at Yeoval, who sold prime Angus cows for 409 cents, weighing 673kg to return $2750.

 

Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where the quality was generally good with a consistent supply of light lambs and secondary trade weights, but well finished heavy and extra heavy lambs were limited in supply which maintained strong demand for lambs with weight.  The trend of the day finished firm to dearer. 

Lightweight lambs to the restockers lifted $20 to sell from $70 to $188.  
Trade weight lambs 18kg to 24kg finished $10 dearer to sell from $208 to $266. Heavier weight lambs over 24kg finished the day firm selling from $258 to $324. While extra heavy lambs reached a top of $477.

The best heavy hoggets reached $280.

In the mutton pens now, where the yarding was mixed with sheep selling to a firm to slightly cheaper trend.

Light weight ewes sold from $90 - $135
Medium weight ewes sold from $148 - $195
Heavy weight ewes sold from $200 - $280

Carter Lindsay & McHugh sold the following lambs and sheep for some of their clients -

John Blease of ‘Tanners Creek’ at Tomingley, sold heavy Dorper lambs for $316. 

John & Sue Duggan of ‘Quindallup’ at Coolah, sold heavy Aussie White ewes for $288.

Lastly for Ben & Liarne Mannix of ‘Gumbooka’ at Bourke, who sold trade weight Dorper lambs for $258.

Please note the applications open on 2 March 2026, and you must have already purchased the equipment before you can apply (this program does not quarantine funds for future purchases). 

Equipment can have a purchase date from 3 October 2023.
