 Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Lamb numbers went down and the quality wasn’t as good, with more lighter Dorper lambs available.  There were good numbers of trade-weight lambs, but fewer heavy and extra-heavy ones.  The increase in light lambs attracted strong demand from restockers and feeders.  Buyers preferred short-skinned lambs that looked fresh over longer-skinned ones.  Overall, restocking lambs became more expensive, short-skinned lambs held steady, and the rest were cheaper.

Restocking lambs up to 18kg were up to $15 more expensive at the top end, selling between $116 and $217 per head.  Trade lambs were steady to $3 cheaper, selling from $230 to $277 for 20–24kg.  Lambs weighing 24–26kg sold from $248 to $296.  Heavy lambs dropped by $10, selling from $287 to $326, while extra-heavy lambs sold from $339 to $393.  The best hogget sold for $326.

Mutton numbers also dropped, and quality was mixed.  Prices were steady to higher, especially for lighter mutton.  Medium-weight ewes sold from $145 to $235.  Heavy crossbred ewes reached $328, and Merino’s sold up to $289.

Carter Lindsay and McHugh sold the following lambs and sheep for some of their clients -

Firstly, Steve Bambrick of ‘Jocyln’ at Mudgee, sold trade Dorper lambs in a fresh condition for $246.

Greg and Sally Whillock of ‘Murga’ at Geurie, sold heavy bare shorn crossbred lambs for $338.
