Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon, this is Shaun McHugh taking a look at the weekly livestock markets out of Dubbo for the 2nd week of May, 2026. 

Tallied numbers this week included –

  7000 fat cattle
28000 lambs and
17000 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where numbers were back, but again cows and weaners made up a large percentage of the yarding.  There were nice pens of yearlings and a better selection of well finished grown steers and heifers in a dearer market.

Young cattle to the trade gained 4 cents with the prime vealers and yearlings selling from 380 - 461c/kg.  

Feeder steers lifted by 15 cents to sell from 440 - 528c/kg, while feeder heifers sold from 380 - 482c/kg.

Grown steers and heifers remained firm with the grown steers selling to 467c/kg and the grown heifers sold to 454c/kg.

Cows to the restockers and processors gained 25 cents with restockers paying up to 347c/kg with the better D3/4 cows selling to a top of 416 cents.

The best heavy bull reached a top of 400 cents.

Carter Lindsay & McHugh sold the following cattle for some of their clients -

Locally for Stan Noonan of ‘Redford Park’, who sold Angus cross heifers for 465 cents, they weighed 426kg to return $1984.

The Crook Family at Eumungerie, sold sale topping cows for 416 cents, weighing 705kg to return $2934.

The Whale Family of ‘Glenroy’ at Wellington, sold Angus steers for 518 cents, they weighed 391kg and returned $2031.

The Crockett family of ‘Nithsdale’ at Bakers Swamp, sold Belted Galloway bullocks for 408 cents, weighing 680kg to return $2775.

The McKay Family of ‘Winnabri’ at Trangie, sold Shorthorn steers for 440 cents, weighing 323kg to return $1422.

The McLaughlin Family of ‘Merryanbone North’ at Warren, sold Angus cross steers for 478 cents, weighing 526kg to return $2516.

The Currans Family of ‘Wyola’ at Hermidale, sold Angus cows for 320 cents, weighing 530kg to come back at $1698.

And lastly for The Dunn Family of ‘Bundong’ at Coolabah, who sold Romagnola steers for 467 cents, they weighed 576kg to return $2693.

 

 Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where the first sale in a fortnight produced a good quality yarding with good numbers of trade and heavy weights.  Light lambs for restockers and Merino’s were well supplied with all regular buyers at the rail in a strong market with increased southern orders.

Lightweight lambs to the processors remained firm to sell from $145 for the plainer unshorn types and up to $236 for the pretty, neatly shorn covered lambs.

Trade lambs also remained firm to sell from $220 - $291.

Heavy lambs lifted in demand and price, up by $12 to sell from $300 - $370 while the extra heavy lambs sold to a top of $385.

Merino trade weights sold from $188 - $244, while the heavy weights sold to $278.

The best heavy hoggets reached a top of $280.

Carter Lindsay & McHugh sold the following lambs for some of their clients -

Greg and Sally-Ann Whillock of ‘Murga’ at Geurie, sold 2nd cross lambs in a 4 score condition, with an inch skin for $335.

The Millner Family of ‘Geurie Homestead’ at Geurie, sold crossbred lambs in a 4 score condition, with an inch skin for $320.

The Baker family of ‘Ercildoon at Narromine, sold Aussie White lambs in a 4 score condition for $298.

Sam & Nikki Mawbey of ‘Burroway’ at Burroway, sold Dorper lambs in a 2/3 score condition for $181.

Lastly for the O’Brien family of ‘Nebinedulla’ at Bollon, who sold Dorper lambs in a 3 score condition for $238.

Into the mutton pens now, where a larger numbers of plainer sheep were on offer.

Light ewes sold from $84 - $145
Medium weight ewes sold from $170 - $230
Heavy ewes sold from $250 - $314

Light wethers sold from $120 - $147
Medium weight wethers sold from $154 - $193
Heavy wethers sold from $200 - $260

Carter Lindsay & McHugh sold the following mutton for some of their clients -

The Bell family of ‘Barney’s’ at Mendooran, sold Dorper ewes in a 2 score condition for $176.

The Bryan Family of ‘Newe Park’ at Warren, sold Dohne ewes in a 3 score condition with an inch skin for $215.

The Giddy Family of ‘Illyria’ at Nyngan, sold Dorper ewes in a 4 score condition for $215.

The Stendell Family of ‘Ben Avon’ at Brewarrina, sold Merino ewes in a 3 score condition in an inch skin for $185.

Jack Murray of ‘Lyndon’ at Walgett, sold Merino ewes in a 2 score condition with an inch skin for $153.

And lastly for The Betts Family of ‘Mirrabooka’ at Cobar, who sold Merino Ewes in a 3 score condition with a 2 inch skin for $195.
