Fat Cattle Report
Good afternoon, this is Sam Knaggs from Carter Lindsay & McHugh taking a look at this week’s livestock markets out of Dubbo for the 1st week of September 2025.
Tallied numbers this week included-
5800 fat cattle
24,000 lambs &
8000 mutton
Into the cattle pens firstly, where numbers eased slightly, but quality remained strong. There was a good number of trade and feeder cattle on offer along with grown steers and heifers. While numbers were limited on heavy bullocks and weaners. Cows yarded were mostly heavy weights and in forward condition.
Young Cattle
Young cattle to the trade remained mostly firm with prime vealers and yearlings selling from 452c to 500c/kg.
Feeder cattle saw increases of 12c to 20c/kg, with steers selling from 466c to 576c/kg, and heifers from 450c to 509c/kg.
Young cattle to the restocker finished strong with steers going back to the paddock for 616c/kg and heifers going to the paddock at 500c/kg
Grown Cattle
Grown steers and heifers were 15c to 20 cents stronger with prime grown steers selling from 470c -529c/kg while prime heavy heifers sold from 460c - 490c/kg
Cows
Cows were 20c - 25 cents dearer with 2 and 3 score cows selling from 320c to 395c/kg, Prime high yielding cows sold between 384c and 434c/kg, to average 412c/kg
Bulls
The best heavy bull reached a top of 418c/kg
Carter Lindsay & McHugh sold the following cattle for some of there clients.
Fred McWhirter of ‘Springfield’ sold Angus cow for 434 cents, weighing 740kgs to return $3,230
Rob Milner of ‘Geurie Homestead’ sold Charolais Steers for 517cents, weighing 430kgs to return $2230
Peter Quirk of ‘Monte Cresto’ sold Angus steers for 614cents, weighing 310kgs to return $1900
Josh Peffer out of Molong Sold Angus heifers for 468cents, weighing 650kgs to return $3050
Fat Sheep & Lamb Report
Into the lamb pens now,
Numbers lifted by 3400 to reach 24000 lambs. The quality was generally good with a strong supply of well finished trade and heavy lambs. There was only a small offering of new season lambs and good numbers of Merinos.
Lightweight Lambs sold to processors for $160 to $200/head, mostly firm in price,
Trade weight New Season lambs finished $5 to $10 dearer and sold from $220 to $290
Trade weight old lambs held firm to $5 dearer, selling from $200 to $295
Heavy weight lambs were $5 to $15 dearer selling from $280 to $370 with well presented short skin lambs reaching a premium
Heavy weight new season lambs were $8 to $15 dearer selling from $290 to $338
Extra heavy lambs remained firm to range from $340 to $450
Merino Lambs finished the day $10 dearer with trade weights selling from $200 - $255 while the heavy weights sold to a top of $340. The best heavy hoggets sold to a top of $360
In the sheep market, 8,000 mutton were yarded, mutton were firm to $10 dearer, with mostly medium and heavy weights penned,
Light weight ewes sold from $90 to $140
Medium weight ewes sold from $150- $190
Heavy weight ewes sold from $ 190 - $260
Carter Lindsay & McHugh sold the following lambs and sheep for some of their clients.
Firstly, Kelly Wongarbon, Sold heavy weight new season lambs for $338.
The Plummer Family of ‘Trigoona’ Tottenham, sold well presented heavy Xb lambs for $335.
Brad & Sophie Cook of ‘Donola’ Tottenham, sold heavy Merino Ewes for $240
Lastly Tim & Pip Sciffmann of ‘Tarthra’ Narromine sold restocker White Suffolk x merino suckers for $209
