Fat Cattle Report

Good morning, this is Campbell Rose taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the last week of August 2025.

Tallied numbers this week included –

6100 fat cattle 
20000 lambs &
5000 mutton

Cattle numbers increased by 2500 this sale, with a total yarding of 6170 head. The yarding was mixed in quality but included a good supply of prime cattle across all categories, including a large consignment of 100-day grain-fed grown steers.  There were also good numbers of young cattle suitable for feeders and backgrounders, along with a noticeable presence of Bos Indicus types.

  • Young cattle to the trade were mostly firm, with prime vealers and yearlings selling from 454 to 512c/kg.

  • Feeder steers:

  • Light and medium weights were 4 to 12 cents cheaper.

    1. Heavy weights were dearer.

    2. Overall, feeder steers sold from 450 to 541c/kg.

  • Feeder heifers remained firm, selling from 390 to 492c/kg.

  • Restocker young cattle held steady, with:

  • Young steers selling up to 614c/kg.

    1. Heifers selling up to 496c/kg.

  • Grown steers and heifers were 17 to 30 cents cheaper.

  • Prime grown steers sold from 425 to 490c/kg.

    1. Prime heifers ranged from 420 to 470c/kg.

  • Cows:

  • Secondary types were dearer.

    1. Prime heavy cows were firm.

    2. 2 and 3 score cows sold from 310 to 382c/kg.

    3. Prime heavy cows ranged from 376 to 415c/kg, averaging 395c/kg.

    4. Restocker cows sold from 215 to 406c/kg.

  • Heavy bulls held firm, selling to a top of 412c/kg.

 

Carter Lindsay and McHugh sold the following cattle for some of their clients -

 Firstly, The Lawson & Quirk Family of ‘Monte Carlo’ at Stuart Town, sold heavy Angus cows for 396 cents, weighing 795kg and returning $3148. 

 Daniel Bynon of ‘Bombowlee’ at Dubbo, sold feeder Angus steers for 528 cents, weighing 390kg and returning $2059.

 Judy Donnelly of ‘Kurrajong’ at Narromine, sold heavy Angus feeder steers for 515 cents, weighing 527kg and returning $2715.

 And lastly, The Young Family of ‘Pinegrove’ at Nyngan, who sold Angus feeder steers for 519 cents, weighing 412kg and returning $2140.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now where the lamb yarding dropped by 16,000 to a total of 20,660 head — the smallest sale in some time.  Overall quality was fair, with a good mix of well-finished trade and heavy weight new season lambs, plus some pens of tidy old season lambs.  Merino lamb numbers remained high.

However, not all regular buyers were present, with a major supermarket and some southern export processors absent.

  • Lightweight lambs (12–18kg, 2 score) sold to processors were $10 cheaper, ranging from $124 to $169

  • Trade lambs started off weaker but gained momentum during the sale

  • New season trade lambs ended up $3 cheaper, selling from $200 to $290

    1. Old trade lambs were $15 cheaper, selling from $200 to $275

  • Heavy weight lambs saw mixed results:

  • Old lambs over 24kg sold from $256 to $420, with the best holding firm, but most were up to $15 cheaper.

    1. Heavy weight new season lambs sold to $328.

  • Merino lambs were $8 to $12 cheaper:

  • Trade weights ranged from $166 to $261

    1. Heavy weights sold up to $300

  • Restocker lambs held firm, selling between $88 and $230

  • Hoggets sold to a top of $308.

Mutton:
5,070 mixed sheep were yarded.

  • Light and medium weight sheep were $7 to $9 dearer.

  • Heavy weight sheep were $4 cheaper.

  • Merino ewes sold from $80 to $258.

  • Crossbred ewes sold from $73 to $250.

  • Merino wethers ranged from $148 to $240, with most sheep selling between 690 and 750c/kg cwt.

 

Carter Lindsay and McHugh sold the following lambs and sheep for some of their clients - 

 Firstly, The Whillock Family of ‘Maxland’ at Geurie, sold vendor bred 2nd cross suckers for $280.

Paul & Carmel Quinn of ‘Caroo’ at Dubbo, sold trade weight Dorper lambs, in a 3 score condition, for $250.

Cody Kirk of ‘Warramunga’ at Peak Hill, sold trade weight Australian White lambs for $240.

And lastly, The Plummer Family of ‘Trigoona’ at Tottenham, sold trade weight Merino lambs for $238.
