Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon, this is Shaun McHugh taking a look at the weekly livestock markets out of Dubbo for the 4th week of August, 2025. 

Tallied numbers this week included -

3800 fat cattle
37000 lambs
11000 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where useful rainfall in some of the supply area reduced numbers this week.  Plenty of feeder cattle were on offer as were cows and trade cattle.  All the usual buyers were operating and in attendance.

Young cattle to the trade remained firm with prime vealers and yearlings selling from 452 to 500c/kg.  

Feeder steers were 8 cents stronger while feeder heifers finished 20 cents better. Feeder steers sold from 458 - 552c/kg and feeder heifers sold from 423 - 504c/kg.  

Young cattle to the restocker finished strong with steers going back to the paddock for 620c/kg and heifers going to the paddock at 480c/kg.
Grown steers and heifers were 6 cents better with prime grown steers selling from 470 -511c/kg and prime heifers selling from 424 - 484c/kg.

Cows finished the day firm with the better D3/4 cows selling from 390 - 420c/kg.  The best heavy bull reached a top of 398c/kg.

Carter Lindsay and McHugh sold the following cattle for some of their clients -

Josh Large of ‘Hennessy Drive’ at Dubbo, sold Speckle Park steers for 498 cents, weighing 475kg to return $2366.

Stan Noonan of ‘Retford Park’ at Dubbo, sold Santa cross heifers for 412 cents, weighing 310kg to return $1277.

Lastly for Red and Steph Waterhouse of ‘Red Briar’ at Nyngan, who sold Santa cross steers for 489 cents, they weighed 294kg and returned $1438.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, Into the lamb pens now, where numbers lifted yet quality was mixed.  A large selection of Merino lambs were on offer as well as good runs of trade and heavyweight lambs.  Most of the usual buyers were operating in a slightly cheaper market.

Lightweight lambs to the processors were $5 cheaper selling from $130 - $185.
Trade weight new season lambs finished firm selling from $220 - $290.
Trade weight old season lambs were $4 cheaper and sold from $190 - $260.
Heavy weight lambs were $6 cheaper, selling from $300 - $368.
Extra heavy lambs remained firm to range from $388 - $400 with an isolated sale that equalled the selling centre record of $477.20.

Merino lambs finished the day $5 dearer with trade weights selling from $190 - $270 while heavy weights sold to a top of $320.
The best heavy hoggets sold to a top of $316.

Carter Lindsay & McHugh sold the following lambs for their some of their clients -

Locally for the Pilon Family of ‘Chloe’, who sold composite cross lambs in a 4 score condition, with a 6 week skin for a selling centre equalling record of $477.20 to the export markets.

Craig & Kerry Walters of ‘Plain Creek’ at Wongarbon, sold crossbred suckers in a 3 score condition for $304.

The Plummer family of Trigoona’ at Tottenham, sold 1st cross wether lambs in a 3 score condition, with a 6 week skin for $360.

To Nyngan for the Hoare Family of ‘Karabran’, who sold Sheepmaster cross lambs in a 3 score condition to the trade orders for $230.

The Pearce family of “Gollenfield”, sold 1st cross wether lambs in a 3 score condition with an inch skin for $203.

Lastly for The Stendell Family of ‘Ben Avon’ at Brewarrina, who sold Merino lambs in a 2 score condition with an inch skin for $163.

Into the mutton pens now where most grades were represented in a cheaper market.

Lightweight ewes sold from $40 - $95
Medium weight ewes sold from $130 - $176
Heavy weight ewes sold from $190 - $220
Extra heavy weight ewes sold from $240 - $270

Light wethers sold from $75 - $130
Medium weight wethers sold from $142 - $178
Heavy wethers sold from $200 - $288

Now just a quick quote this week for the O’Brien family of ‘Nebinedulla’ at Bollon, who sold heavy Dorper wethers in a 4 score condition for $262.
