Fat Cattle Report
Good afternoon everybody, this is John Lindsay with a look at this week’s livestock markets out of Dubbo for the 3rd week of August 2025.
Tallied numbers this week included -
7300 cattle
28000 lambs and
9500 mutton
Into the cattle pens firstly where there was another large number on offer with all categories represented. The market in general was only slightly cheaper for most on the back of very strong markets in previous weeks and given the numbers it is still a very solid market.
Light vealer steers under 300kg to restockers 394 - 606 cents but mainly around the 530 cent mark, with heavier drafts 455 – 595 cents.
Light vealer heifers also to restockers in shorter supply 400 - 420 cents with heavier drafts over 300kg 436 - 472 cents.
Yearling steers under 400kg to feeders 440 - 538 cents but mainly around 477 cents with a large number of crossbreds this week, with drafts over 400kg 466 - 542 cents with the top end being the Angus drafts. Kill drafts saw sales between 440 and 494 cents.
Yearling heifers under 400kg to feeders 394 - 460 cents but mainly around 422 for the forward drafts or 374 - 372 cents for the plainer types to restockers. Heavier drafts over 400kg also to feeders 420 - 474 cents with suitable kill drafts 438 - 479 cents.
To export sales with heavy feeders up to 600kg, 489 - 525 cents and we did see some drafts over 600kg to feed make up to 500 cents, but bearing in mind a large percentage of these steers this week were in very forward in condition. Kill drafts 452 - 494 cents. Export heifers to kill also very strong 370 - 479 cents, with feeder drafts 360 - 406.
Cows were at least 5 - 10 cents cheaper this week still very good with light boner cows 210 – 250 cents, medium weights 308 - 368 cents to kill or 256 - 336 cents to restockers, with heavy high yielding cows 342 - 405 cents but most sales around 385 cents. The best bulls 340 - 370 cents.
Carter Lindsay & McHugh had the following cattle results for clients this week -
Locally for Craig & Kerry Walters of “Plain Creek”, who sold forward well bred Angus steers to feedlotters for 530 cents they weighed 505kg and these top steers came back at $2675.
To Tooraweenah for the McWhirter family of “Springfield”, who sold very forward Angus steers, of the crop to the heavy feeders for 525 cents, they weighed 590kg and these top steers came back at $3100, while prime Angus cows on the same truck made 400 cents 655kg and these top cows came back at $2630.
At Baradine for the Johnston family, who sold well bred Santa steers that weighed 505kg for 478 cents and these fresh steers came back at 2430.
To Coonamble for MM Pastoral, who sold yearling Charolais steers to feedlotters for 485 cents they weighed 510kg and these forward steers came back at $2470.
To Nyngan for Nugget Carter of “Birrimba”, who sold prime Santa cows for 395 cents they weighed 715kg to return $2825.
Richard and Linda Young of “Pinegrove”, sold scanned empty 2 tooth heifers to feedlotters for 442 cents they weighed 455kg and they came back at $2030.
While for an Eastern vendor 2 tooth Angus cross heifers to the kill for 471 cents they weighed 565kg and they came back at $2660.
Fat Sheep & Lamb Report
Into the lamb pens now, where there was a larger number on offer with most categories represented. The market in general was $10 - $15 cheaper for most and could have been more on the plainer drafts, on what is still a strong market.
To the suckers firstly with trade weights $210 - $252
Heavy trade / light export $270 - $290
Up to 26kg dressed seeing sales between $280 - 290
With drafts up to 30kg dressed $314 - $320.
Into older crossbred sales, with light kill drafts up to 16kg dressed $138 - $155
Up to 18 kg dressed $160 - $180
Light trade $188 - $244
Medium trade $170 - $275 and mainly around the $230 mark
Heavy trade / light export $250 - $300
Drafts up to 30kg dressed $286 - $373 and mainly around the $330 mark
With super heavies over 30kg dressed $345 - $410
To Merino sales, light kill drafts around 16kg dressed $118 - $166 or around $150
Up to 18kg dressed $160 - $180
Light trade $170 - $188
Medium trade $195 - $220
Heavy trade / light export $237 - $263
With drafts up to 30kg dressed $259 - $301
Carter Lindsay & McHugh sold the following lambs for their clients –
Firstly locally for The Whillock Family of “Maxland” at Geurie, who sold export weight 2nd cross lambs with an 8 week skin, in a 4 score condition and these top lams made $345.
Greg & Sally-Ann Whillock of “Murga”, sold export weight 2nd cross suckers – well rounded in a 4 score condition, and these top young lambs made $290.
The Millner Family of “Geurie Homestead” who sold export weight 2nd cross lambs with a 1 inch skin, in a 4 score condition to the exporters and these top lambs made $376.
For The Pugh Family of “Gundong” at Tomingley, sold export weight Merino lambs with a fresh 8 week skin, in a 3 score condition and these top lambs made $263.
Jason Beck at Coonamble, sold very tidy Merino lambs with an inch skin, in a 3 score condition and they made $170.
At Nyngan for The Hoare Family of “Bel-Air”, who sold very tidy trade weight SAMM lambs with an 8 week skin, in a 3 score condition and these top lambs made $248.
Richard & Cath Hoare of “Karabran”, sold tidy Sheepmaster lambs to the trade butchers in a tidy 3 score condition and these t6op lambs made $183.
At Girilambone for Tom & Margot Elder of “Woorndoo”, who sold heavy weight Aussie White lambs in a 3 score condition and they made $260.
Anthony & Kate Gibson of “Wilgadale”, sold tidy Merino lambs to the trade butchers, with a 6 week skin and these neat lambs made $170.
And lastly for Ben & Liarne Mannix of “Gumbooka” at Bourke, who sold heavy trade weight dorper lambs in a 3 score condition for $202.
Into the mutton pens now, where like the lambs the market in general was up to $15 cheaper for all categories, but again still a very good market
Light boner ewes $60 to $80
Boner ewes $90 to $120
Medium weights $131 to $190 for Merino’s or $132 to $176 for crossbreds
With drafts up to 30kg dressed $200 to $275 for Merino’s with most sales around $230
With super heavies over 30kg dressed $155 to $290 for crossbreds or $226 to $290 for Merino’s, but most sales were around the $270 mark.
Boner wethers in shorter supply $100 to $112
Medium weights $143 to $190 and up to $200 for the pick
With export weights up to 30kg dressed seeing most sale between $180 and $246 with most sales either side of $200.
Carter Lindsay & McHugh sold the following mutton for their clients –
Locally for George & Jess Holland of “Avondale”, who sold large framed Merino ewes with a 4 week skin and these top ewes made $230.
Ben Doherty at Tullamore, sold large framed Merino ewes in a 3 score condition and they made $206.
On the same truck as the lambs, Greg & Sally-Ann Whillock sold large framed crossbred ewes in a 4 score condition, with an inch skin and they made $280.
While also on the same truck as the lambs for Tom & Margot Elder, who sold large framed Merino ewes in a 3 score condition to the exporters and these top ewes made $230.
