Fat Cattle Report
Good afternoon, this is Sam Knaggs taking a look at this week’s livestock markets out of Dubbo for the 3rd week of August, 2026.
Tallied numbers this week included-
2400 fat cattle
22500 Lambs and
7800 Sheep
Into the cattle pens firstly, where numbers eased this week by roughly 900. The yarding quality this week saw good lines of prime cattle to cover all sections, while the feeder cattle were in shorter supply. All the usual buyers were operating along with the return of a major export buyer.
Young Cattle
Young cattle to the trade were mostly 15 cents dearer, with prime vealers and yearlings selling from 440 to 550c/kg.
Lightweight feeders this week were 5 cents dearer, while the heavier weight feeders fell 10 cents in places with the overall feeder steers selling from 420 to 550c/kg and the feeder heifers sold from 380 to 528c/kg, with the well presented lines selling mainly from 460 to 530 cents.
Young cattle to the restocker finished up to 30 cents dearer, with steers selling to 598c/kg and heifers 472c/kg.
Grown Cattle
Grown steers and heifers were 7 to 12 cents dearer, with prime grown steers selling 420 to 490 cents, while prime grown heifers sold from 430 - 498c/kg
Cows
Plain 2 and 3 score cows finished 12 cents cheaper selling from 250 to 365c/kg and prime high yielding cows sold between 365 and 430c/kg, to average 398c/kg.
Bulls
The best heavy bull reached a top of 452c/kg
Just a couple of quotes for Carter Lindsay & McHugh clients -
The Lawson Family of ‘Monte Carlo’ at Stuart Town, sold well finished Santa cross heifers for 480 cents, weighing 595kg to return $2850 they also sold Charolais cross cows for 432 cents, weighing 656kg to return $2836.
Lastly for Gordon O’Neill family of ‘Nellady’ at Trangie, who sold Hereford steers for 515 cents, weighing 260kg to return $1330.
Fat Sheep & Lamb Report
Into the lamb pens now where the quality this week saw good runs of well finished heavy weights along with trade weights also. Merino lambs were well supplied, while big runs of exotics were on offer
Trade weight lambs 18kg to 24kg finished $7 cheaper to sell from $220 to $305 to average 1215 cents.
A few pens of trade weight new season lambs sold from $270 to $296.
Heavy weight lambs finished the day $3 cheaper selling from $302 to $343.
While lambs over 30kg reached a top of $380.
Trade weight Merino lambs this week sold from $184 to $281 and the heavy weight Merino lamb sold out to a top of $315.
The best heavy hoggets reached $285
In the sheep pens, where the mutton yarded covered most categories with sheep selling up to $15 dearer.
Light weight ewes sold from $120 - $180
Medium weight ewes sold from $190 - $250
Heavy weight ewes sold from $240 - $310
Carter Lindsay & McHugh sold the following lambs and sheep for some of their clients -
Greg and Sally Whillock of ‘Maxland’ at Geurie, sold trade weight crossbred suckers for $296.
A local Vendor sold well finished Merino lambs, off the crop for $282.
The Giddy family from Nyngan, sold heavy Dorper lambs for $299.
The Young family of ‘Pinegrove’ at Nyngan, sold heavy crossbred lambs for $314, while the heavy crossbred ewes from the same consignment reached $310.
Lastly for a Northern client, who sold a large run of heavy Dorper lambs reaching $303.
