Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon everybody this is John Lindsay with just the cattle market report due to the Easter break.

This week there was just shy of 8,000 cattle in Dubbo on what was a mixed yarding with most categories represented with a lot of drafts starting to show the effects of a dry season.  Basically, the market was firm to slightly cheaper for all good quality, fresher forward cattle with plainer drafts up to 20 cents cheaper.

Light vealer steers under 200kg live mainly all to restockers 440 – 520 cents, with the heavier drafts up to the late 200kg 340 – 536 cents, with most sales around the 450 cent mark.

Light vealer heifers under 200kg to restockers 340 – 420 cents, but they had to be fresh to get over 400 cents.  Heavier drafts up to late 200kg live 280 – 438 cents, but most sales around 370 – 380 cents.

Lighter yearling steers either side of 300kg live to feeders 390 – 527 cents, with most sales around 470 cents, with the plainer types to restockers 350 – 470 cents, with most sales just a tick over 400 cents.  Drafts up to 400kg live to feeders 380 – 528 cents, with most sales just shy of 500 cents, with heavier drafts over 400kg to feedlotters 450 – 528 cents, with most sales either side of 500 cents.

Light yearling heifers under 300kg live to restockers 340 – 390 cents, with the heavier drafts over 300kg also to restockers 250 – 390 cents, with most sales around that 350 cent mark and mainly on the plainer types.  Feeder drafts up to 400kg 362 – 472 cents, with most sales around 430 cents, but bearing in mind, up to this weight we are dealing with the fresher forward drafts.  With heavier drafts over 400kg in high demand 424 – 440 cents for the fresh drafts or 458 – 480 cents for the fresher forward drafts.

Into export sales with heavy steers in short supply but high demand, with heavy kill steers 420 – 470 cents and heavy heifers 400 – 466 cents and all mainly being 2 and 4 teeth.

Cows this week were a little bit softer, with light boner cows 190 – 290 cents, with restocker drafts 155 – 346 cents, with most sales either side of 300 cents, with the framier types making up to 340 cents.

Medium weight cows to processors 310 – 345 cents, with heavy high yielding cows 250 -355 cents for the plainer drafts or 350 – 387 cents for the pick with most sales around 360 cents.

Carter Lindsay and McHugh had the following results for their clients -

Locally for Craig and Kerry Walters of ‘Plain Creek’ at Wongarbon, who sold their usual well bred Angus steer calves that weighed 290kg for 526 cents and these top calves came back at $1525.

For Ian and Ilka Grattan of “Pine Park”, who sold young Angus steers to backgrounders that weighed 322kg for 500 cents and they came back at $1615.

David Hearn of ‘San Diego’ at Dubbo, sold heavy Angus feeder steers in fresh condition that weighed 515kg for 518 cents and these top steers came back at $2670.

At Tooraweenah for Graham and Annette Markey of “Lancelot”, who sold large framed Angus cows that weighed 600kg for 345 cents and they came back at $2080.

The Altus family of ‘Fermoy’ at Coonamble, sold Angus cross bullocks that weighed 615kg for 476 cents and these top steers came back at $2930.

While at Nyngan for the George family of “The Corners”, who sold fresh Santa cross weaner steers that weighed 285kg for 462 cents, to backgrounders and they came back at $1320.

 Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

As you may be aware, a new rebate scheme has recently been announced for hand-held equipment for the NSW Sheep and Goat eID program. 

This funding is specific to producers and livestock agents.

Please note the applications open on 2 March 2026, and you must have already purchased the equipment before you can apply (this program does not quarantine funds for future purchases). 

Equipment can have a purchase date from 3 October 2023.

When filling out your NVD please ensure you complete and answer each question - please also ensure you sign and date the NVD.

If you make a mistake please initial it.

It is a legal requirement that the NVD is filled out correctly each time you sell livestock.
