Fat Cattle Report

Good morning, this is Campbell Rose taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the 4th week of April 2026.

Tallied numbers this week included –
11500 fat cattle  
31000 lambs &
19500 mutton

A new record was set at Dubbo, with 11,500 cattle sold.  The yarding was similar to previous sales, with many cows and their young calves.  There were only small numbers of well-finished steers, heifers, and yearlings for feeder buyers. Some regular buyers didn’t attend, including restockers and feeder buyers.

Prices for young cattle sold to processors were lower, with top-quality yearlings selling between 330 and 470 cents per kg.  The best feeder cattle held their value, but most were 15 to 25 cents cheaper.  Feeder steers sold for 382 to 518 cents and feeder heifers for 320 to 477 cents per kg.  Prices for restocker cattle dropped more, with young steers down 55 cents and heifers down 70 to 125 cents per kg.

Grown steers and heifers were slightly cheaper, down 4 to 8 cents.  Prime grown steers sold for 400 to 472 cents and heifers for 400 to 466 cents per kg. Cow prices fell by 20 to 25 cents, selling from 180 to 304 cents per kg.  A few top-quality cows sold higher, up to 388 cents, while most heavy cows averaged 311 cents per kg.  Restocker cows were up to 45 cents cheaper, selling from 120 to 274 cents per kg.  Bulls were also down by 20 cents, selling up to 386 cents per kg.

 

Carter Lindsay and McHugh sold the following cattle for some of their clients -

 Firstly, Ollie & Brooke Holland of ‘Uungula’ at Wellington, sold heavy Angus heifers, 4 & 6T for 432 cents, weighing 555kg and returning $2399.

 Ian & Ilka Grattan of ‘Pine Park’ at Wellington, sold vendor bred Angus weaner steers for 500 cents, weighing 311kg and returning $1559.

 The McLaughlin Family of ‘Merryanbone North’ at Warren, sold Angus feeder steers for 502 cents, weighing 476kg and returning $2348.

 Lastly for The Weber Family of ‘Chelsea’ at Tottenham’, who sold Angus weaner steers for 494 cents, weighing 235kg and returning $1161.

Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where numbers increased by 2600 to a total of 31000 lambs.  The quality was mixed, with a good range of trade and heavy lambs, along with plenty of plainer lambs suited to feeders and restockers.  Most regular buyers were present and active.

Prices dropped in many areas.  Restocker and feeder lambs were $4 to $8 cheaper.  Restockers paid between $116 and $248 per head, while feeders paid up to $289.

Light lambs for processing stayed about the same price, selling from $146 to $226 per head.  Trade lambs were around $10 cheaper, selling from $225 to $299.  Heavy lambs dropped $16 to $18, selling from $275 to $361.

Merino lambs were $10 to $20 cheaper.  Trade-weight Merino’s sold from $202 to $260 and heavier ones up to $298.  Hoggets sold up to $299.

There were 19500 mutton, mostly plainer quality with some good pens.  Light sheep were $6 to $10 more expensive, but medium and heavy sheep were up to $20 cheaper.

Merino ewes sold from $95 to $290, and crossbred ewes from $178 to $301. Merino wethers sold from $141 to $239 and one crossbred wether sold for $302.

 Firstly, George & Jess Holland of ‘Avondale’ at Goolma, sold bare shorn Merino ewes for $220. 

 Greg and Vicki O’Connor of ‘Warren Downs’ at Wongarbon, sold heavy vendor bred crossbred lambs for $340.

 Kel Baker of ‘Ercildoon’ at Narromine, sold heavy Australian White lambs for $300.

 Simon & Kelly Earl of ‘Longstowe’ at Warren, sold heavy Merino ewes for $237.

And Lastly for Michael, Jocelyn & Declan Hoare of ‘Bel-Air’ at Nyngan, who sold well presented crossbred lambs for $322.
