Fat Cattle Report

Good morning, this is Sam Knaggs taking a look at this week’s livestock market out of Dubbo for the last week of May, 2026.  Tallied numbers this week included-

  1520 fat cattle
15000 lambs and
6500 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where numbers eased again with general rain in the surrounding areas.  There was a mixed yarding of cattle with a large percentage of cows along with grain fed steers and heifers.  The usual buyers were present and competing on a dearer market.

Young Cattle

Young cattle to the trade were mostly firm to slightly dearer with prime vealers and yearlings selling from 425 to 515c/kg. 

Feeder heifers this week saw strong competition to sell from 430 to 520c/kg

While feeder steers sold from 446 to 556c/kg

Young cattle to the restocker finished strong, with steers going back to the paddock for 520c/kg and heifers 450c/kg

Grown Cattle 

Grown steers and heifers were firm to 10 cents dearer, with prime grown steers selling to 490 cents, while prime heavy heifers sold from 390 - 480c/kg

Cows 

Cows finished 10 to 20 cents dearer, with plain 2 and 3 score restocker cows selling from 330 to 389c/kg and prime high yielding cows sold between 380 and 426c/kg to average 406c/kg

Bulls

The best heavy bull reached a top of 425c/kg

Just a couple of quotes for Carter Lindsay & McHugh clients this week -

A local vendor sold Angus heifers for 478 cents, weighing 687kg to return $3290. That same vendor also sold Speckle Park heifers for 490 cents, weighing 470kg to return $2300.

The Kinsey Family at Euchareena, sold prime Speckle Park cows for 424 cents, weighing 680kg to return $2890.

Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens where the quality this week had a consistent supply of light weight Dorper and Merino lambs.  

Trade weights this week were in strong demand especially on the light and medium weights as they are going back into the feedlots.  Heavy lambs were back in number while extra heavy lambs were short in supply.  The overall market saw a $5 to $10 increase.

Lightweight lambs up to 18kg sold to the restocker from $146 to $236, bare shorn crossbred feeder lambs sold up to $290 fetching well of 1200c/kg.  

Trade weight lambs 18kg to 24kg finished firm to $10 dearer to sell from $217 to $274 to average 1170 cents.   

Heavy weight lambs finished the day $5 dearer selling from $288 to $355 averaging 1145 cents.  

While extra heavy lambs reached a top of $392 but were limited in supply

The best heavy hoggets reached $310.

In the sheep pens, the mutton yarded covered most categories with sheep selling to a dearer trend due to limited numbers with most ewes ranging from 820 to 900 cents.

Light weight ewes sold from $100 - $155
Medium weight ewes sold from $160 - $215
Heavy weight ewes sold from $220 - $321

Carter Lindsay & McHugh sold the following lambs and sheep for some of their clients -

David Knaggs of ‘Fairview’ at Dubbo, sold heavy Suffolk lambs for $340, he also sold heavy crossbred ewes for $298.

The Colbran family at Dubbo, sold heavy Aussie White ewes for $267.

Paul & Bec Smith at Dubbo, sold heavy weight Aussie White lambs for $297.

A Northern client sold fresh trade weight Dorper lambs for $258.

Lastly please remember the Dubbo store sale will be held on Thursday next week 4/6/26 commencing at 1pm after the Fat Sale due to limited numbers expected.

Please note the applications open on 2 March 2026, and you must have already purchased the equipment before you can apply (this program does not quarantine funds for future purchases). 

Equipment can have a purchase date from 3 October 2023.
